Mission

Social Studies instruction in FISD starts with a focus on our state standards called TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) and incorporates  Social Studies Literacy Skills. These skills provide the foundation that allow students to develop their skills in critical thinking with a goal for Social Studies in Frisco ISD is for students to have the tools to develop their understanding of history, government, economics, and the world.

Foundational Beliefs

Social Studies instruction in FISD is grounded in our foundational beliefs:

  • TEKS Based Instruction: Instruction that is led by the TEKS and provides teachers with what students need to know and be able to do for each Social Studies Course.

  • Backwards Design: Intentional design of curriculum by setting goals before choosing instructional methods and forms of assessment.

  • Literacy: Reading and writing are integral to the social studies classroom. Students will receive feedback and have opportunities to improve these skills on a regular basis.

  • Growth Mindset: Belief that ability can be developed through hard work, embracing challenges, risk-taking, and perseverance in the face of failure.

  • Personalization of Learning: Tailoring learning for each student’s strengths, needs, and interests-including enabling student voice and choice in what, how, when, and where they learn.

  • Transferring Learning: Application of knowledge and skills through tasks that are meaningful and engaging to students and apply to “real-world situations.” (Future Ready)

  • Social Studies Skills: Foundational skills that form the backbone of instruction, and provide students with the opportunity to develop the skills of historians, economists, geographers, etc.
