Jane, hi
Yes the butterfly scheme is a very good idea, it takes time and attention to get it right though. When my hubby was in hospital they were using the butterfly logo but the staff didn't take any notice of it, the catering people weren't aware of it and any visiting medics were totally unaware. To be honest it was a paper exercise which ticked the right boxes for something but certainly not anyone suffering memory problems or dementia or their carers.
There was also a Dementia Matron in the hospital who's job was to ensure that any patient, on any ward, with dementia was taken care of as if they were in a dementia unit. This also didn't work as only the cleaning staff seemed to be aware of how to take dementia into account when they were around the ward.
I think getting basic levels of care right and treating everyone with respect would go a long way to making hospital a better place but these schemes do have a place it helping us to get there.
I hope that you have a positive experience with the butterfly scheme and I look forward to hearing more.
With best wishes from Jo
